After serving the community for almost 30 years, Spectrum Health Services Inc. is opening a new, environment-friendly clinic which will increase the amount of patients served and the types of services provided.

SHS purchased the new facility at 52nd Street and Haverford Avenue in 2007  to replace the current Haddington Health Center located at 5619 Vine St. The health agency received a $14 million finance package, new market tax credits and commercial loans, said Phyllis Cater, CEO of SHS.

“New space was imperative to continue to serve the community,” Cater said.

SHS, formerly known as The Nelson Medical Group, first appeared in the area in 1984 and provided family planning services for low-income residents. Later, the health agency added prenatal care, pediatrics and adult care, according to the agency’s website.

The health center started as a 4,000 square foot building and was later expanded to the 10,000 square foot property currently in use.

“We quickly ran out of space,” Cater said.

The new center is 36,000 square feet and will provide space for 34 rooms, 20 rooms more than the current center.

“We will have a pharmacy dispensary for folks to get their medications and we will have an 80 seat community room for meetings and support groups,” Cater said.
