Amateur Sports: Playing Kickball and Making Friends

Players await the start of the game.

Philadelphia Sport and Social Club is the largest organized recreational adult sports club the city has to offer, with eleven leagues, ranging from badminton to dodgeball. Kickball is among the more popular groups to join in the spring and summertime.

“Kickball as an adult is just as competitive as in my elementary days, ” said Tom Bendar, who plays on team “Kick in the Box.” “I have grown up with many of the players. We have remained best friends throughout the years and they still are awful at this sport. It is just amusing now to have our wives play on the team with us too, though we bench them mostly.”

These various co-ed sports teams give young adults the opportunity to interact with new people.

“I moved to Philadelphia for a job about two years ago and didn’t know anyone in the city,” said Emily Andre. “Given the chance to meet so many new people really helped me to get out of my shell, explore the city and I have now made life-long friends.”

Locations of each sport event vary throughout Philadelphia with dozens of leagues competing against each other throughout the   year.

“It is nice to be able to de-stress from the corporate world through these sports activities,” said Kenya Holli. “Being able to play on a Sunday night is a great way to end the weekend and brace myself for the next one ahead.”
