Cedar Park: Greensgrow West Teams Up With Mobile Markets To Supply Fresh Produce

Nestled in the middle of the 4900 block of Baltimore Avenue sun shines on what would otherwise be a vacant lot and reminder of what once was a burnt down building.

“We take pride in our area,” said Jennifer Foster, retail manger of Greensgrow West. “Gardening isn’t just a hobby it’s much more than that. It’s a way of looking at something and striving to make it as productive and beautiful as possible.”

Greensgrow West is a branch garden of Greensgrow Farms located in Kensington. This is the second location of an already nationwide leader in urban farming.

The nursery and its staff prides itself on their continuing community outreach and according to their mission statement they hope to, “revitalize livable communities through the practice of sustainable entrepreneurial urban agriculture.”

Greensgrow Farms and Greensgrow West teamed up with Mobile Markets to provide City Supported Agriculture for residents of Philadelphia looking to learn how to properly prepare and cook produce. CSA members pay for a seasonal share of food and every week are able to pick up fresh produce.

“Choosing the right produce to eat every week is a good start but learning how to prepare your food and how to grow your own food is even more essential,” said Lauren Marsella, the Mobile Markets’ manager.

Marsella distributes produce to CSA members at Greensgrow West weekly in addition to various nursing homes and other food deserts around Philadelphia.
