There are two options for exporting full quality video using Final Cut Pro. The quality level for each option is roughly the same, yet the process is quite different. Depending on your access to the required technology, you can choose the most appropriate option.

First, you can export in much the same way that you would for putting video on the Philadelphia Neighborhoods page in WordPress. However, instead of the process taking just a few minutes, exporting a full-quality, digital version of your video often takes upwards of two hours. In addition, this process requires virtually all of your computer’s available memory, so it is best to not have any other applications or processes, such as word processing or a Web browser, running while exporting using this method. Additionally, the file created in this method will be quite large – usually at least 2 GB, so plan accordingly if you will need to transport the file on a portable storage device.

To export a full quality digital version, simply go to the File menu -> Export -> Quicktime movie, as opposed to the standard option for MURL – Quicktime Conversion. From here, you will be prompted to title your video and choose a save location.

The other, less time-consuming method to export a full quality video is to print to tape. In order to do this, you will need access to a DV deck, such as the ones in the MURL office, or in the Tech Center. You will also need a DV tape, preferably a new, blank one. To print to tape, simply make sure your tape is set at the proper location (the video will start recording wherever your tape is set), choose the “automatically start recording” option, and click ok. The two images below show you where the print to video option is, and how you should have it set up in the final command screen.
