Among the many organizations that provide physical and mental health care to the area, the CHOP Care Network for Pediatric and Adolescent Care at Cobbs Creek offers specialized services geared to the full-spectrum development of children.

The Cobbs Creek branch has been located on Cobbs Creek Parkway for 17 years and remains a vital resource in the community. Programs such as asthma prevention, domestic violence awareness and information on family planning are the staple of the branch’s services.

CHOP at Cobbs Creek’s primary focus is pediatric services into adolescent care. Beginning from the age of newborn to 21 years old, young people from low-income families can receive health care. Claire Bowers is the Practice Director at the location and believes that the best aspects of the facility is its family-like support and longevity.

“What makes us different than other health care providers in the community is that families stay with us from newborn until they graduate from college, so we grow with them – it’s a family,” said Bowers.

Those employed at the site are generally from the Cobbs Creek area, which makes addressing the needs of the community a bit more personal. Health professionals have found that one of the major areas of concern in the neighborhood is teen pregnancy and a lack of sexual health awareness.

“We understand that we cannot prevent young people from engaging in sexual activity, but we can encourage them to take advantage of the birth control resources we provide” said Bowers.

The CHOP Pediatric and Adolescent site provides its young clients with drawstring bags full of special freebies including a water bottle, a flashlight, a wristband, condom holders and many other items that serve as reminders for optimal physical and mental health.

One of the more unusual services offered is the ‘Reach Out and Read’ program where they offer new books to patients beginning at the age of newborn to 5 years old each time they come in for a visit. After the age of 5, young people are able to choose from a selection of gently used books in the physicians office that they are interested in. These book selections are provided through donations that are screened for appropriate content before being distributed to the patients.

CHOP at Cobbs Creek prides itself on being a community oriented health care provider that makes it a priority to know its clients and neighbors.

“If you want a site that will provide for both your needs, not just medical, this is the site,” Bowers said.
