The Hive, a women’s only co-working space located in Old City, recently opened its doors for its first community event.
In honor of Boss’s Day, about two dozen dressed-for-success women gathered at 222B Race Street, where The Hive’s owner and founder, Melissa Alam, hopes to soon have about ten other women working independently by her side. Alam says The Hive is meant to be a place where like-minded women can come and have their ideas flourish into fruition.
Co-working spaces first began popping up in Philadelphia around 2007. Startupphl.com lists 18 of them on their website, not including The Hive, which is the only one that is exclusively for women.
Sara Ann Kelly was among the women who were networking at the Boss’s Day event, clinking champagne glasses and toasting to Alam’s new venture. Kelly is the owner of SAK PR and she serves as communications director for the Hive.
“It’s really exciting to be working with The Hive and getting to know all these really wonderful female entrepreneurs that Philly has been hiding,” Kelly said. “The Hive is giving them a safe place to kind of congregate and get some shit done.”
