Anyone with a pet will tell you that Fluffy is more than just an animal. They are a member of the family.

And just like a new parent is willing to pay more for the organic baby food that promises to keep their infant healthy and happy, many pet owners will go out of their way to offer their furry friend the best that money can buy.

Pet ownership – specifically regarding dogs, increased 3 percentage points between 2009 and 2013. As a result, the pet product market is growing each year. In 2014, animal owners spent more than $22 billion on food for their “fur babies,” and according to research by GFK. Around 67 percent of those dollars were spent on natural products.

Jackie Starker, who owns Amelie’s Bark Shop, keeps these decisions in mind when stocking her Passyunk Avenue animal bakery.

“Natural ingredients and eco-friendly packaging were definitely the focus from the start,” Starker said, who bakes her organic treats in-store.

Starker, who lives above her South Philadelphia pet store, recognizes the values of her customers. With the trend on Passyunk Avenue moving toward younger residents, many value not only organic ingredients for their pets but also place a strong emphasis on environmentally friendly products. Every product at Amelie’s is chosen with this in mind, from recycled bottles for stuffing to natural wood dog bowls.
