Queen Village: A Thrift Store Helps AIDS Sufferers

Philly AIDS Thrift located on 514 Bainbridge St.  has a reputation for having almost anything one could possibly think of.  The store has so many items they seemingly fall out of the front door onto the sidewalk.

Beyond having a wide variety of clothing, music, jewelry and house wares, Philly AIDS Thrift has a charitable mission.  After wages and rent are deducted from their earnings the store donates the rest to The AIDS Fund.  The AIDS Fund then distributes the proceeds to 29 AIDS agencies in Philadelphia.

Erica Hoffman, 41, walks all the way from the Newbold section of South Philadelphia regularly to browse through the store, “The thing I like the best about this place is that whenever I come here I find stuff that I didn’t know I couldn’t live without until I saw it.”

Another loyal customer, Bruce Smith, 45, said, “It’s one of the best. I mean, I’ve been coming here when it was on South Street and then it moved.  So now I haven’t been to this one in a while, but it still hasa lot of good stuff.”

Across the street from Philly AIDS Thrift is their warehouse, which is open on the weekend and holds all of their furniture, appliances and electronics. Whether visiting the store to find a great deal on something you need or just to check out the uniqueness of the place it’s worth the trip.
