“This community doesn’t have a lot and this center is like a one stop shop,” said Dorsi Phillips, HERO’s executive director.

HERO provides after school programs for the youth. It has a computer lab that is open to both the community and the adults. It has a suicide prevention program. During the summer months HERO holds a six-week summer camp for neighborhood children.

Not only does HERO do its best to help children in its community, but it’s also do what it can for seniors. Part-time employment, job training and holiday dinners are just a a few things HERO does to reach out to the seniors.

“We even rent out our spaces for social needs, like weddings or parties,” said Phillips.

“Helping energize and rebuild ourselves” is the slogan HERO was built upon and it does just that for Nicetown. Providing this community with as much as it can this community center doesn’t plan on stopping anytime soon.
