On a warm Saturday morning, residents of Port Richmond start off their day at Campbell Square, a three-acre park that lies in the heart of the neighborhood, to walk their dogs. Many of the dog walkers live in close proximity and prefer the park because of its convenience and picturesque charm.
An avid dog walker and Port Richmond resident of two years, Isabella Jablonska, has brought her 12-year-old pug Maggie to the park every morning for the past two years and knows many of the other local dog walkers. She brings Maggie to the park because the energetic dog can’t seem to sit still. Jablonska said that Maggie looks so good because she is constantly running around.
“Maggie and I come to this park a lot,” Jablonska said. “It’s very nice and is closest in town.”
Another local resident and proud Phillies fan, Dave Cola, said that he brings his dog, Jack, an American eskimo, Pomeranian and poodle mix, to Campbell Square because he doesn’t have a back yard.
Cola said that he brings Jack four to five times a day and Jack only plays with female dogs. He explained that Jack is not neutered so he has to keep a close eye on him at the park.
“It is a nice, safe and clean park,” Cola said. “Not many problems happen here and that’s a big reason why I come as often as I do.”
Campbell Square, the central public gathering place for the community, provides a quiet morning retreat for Port Richmond locals who walk their dogs, exercise by walking with their baby strollers, and read their copies of local newspapers.
