On the corner of 29th and Cumberland streets, the “7 Days Food Market and Deli” already had customers waiting at the door before 8 a.m.
Owner Fareed Alhuraibi opens the store at eight every morning for the neighborhood rush hour. Within the first 20 minutes, the store already had more than five customers.
Alhuraibi has been serving the Strawberry Mansion neighborhood for the past 14 years. The tiny store consisted of two aisles filled with food and cleaning supplies. In the back of the store was a deli and two pots of coffee.
Alhuraibi said the only reason he bought the store was because it was very cheap.
Alhuraibi travels everyday from Holme Circle, where he currently resides. His co-worker, who lives on top of the store, opens the deli at 9 o’clock.
Alhuraibi said the deli and cigarettes are his “moneymaker.”
Although he works behind a glass wall for security purposes, Alhuraibi is friendly with most of his customers. He does not have any weapons in the store for his protection.
The store is open seven days a week from eight in the morning to seven at night, when he gets his last rush around six o’clock.
