The Boyd family knows a thing or two when it comes to producing quality baked goods. The Boyd family has been baking and creating delicious desserts and ice creams for over a century. Since 1889 Bredenbeck’s Bakery has been welcoming its customers into the historic shop located at 8126 Germantown Ave. in Chestnut Hill.

Bredenbecks is a fourth-generation family-run business. The current owner is Karen Boyd, but her daughter, Lauren, runs the day-to-day operations. Laura is very aware and proud of the history that Bredenbecks shares with Chestnut Hill. Laura is also very educated on her family’s history and how they had come to continue the tradition of Bredenbeck’s Bakery.

The ambitious intentions of Lauren’s great grandfather, who was a young apprentice eager to establish himself in the business, helped to create the bakery and to mold the generations of the Boyds to follow.

“My great grandfather was Fred Bredenbeck’s apprentice. One day Fred told my great-grandfather that he could have the keys to the business and gave him a loan to help him grow the bakery. Fred was exhausted from getting up at three in the morning every day and handed my great-grandfather the business. From there, every generation has put its own unique mark on
Bredenbeck’s Bakery,” Lauren said.

Lauren Boyd, daughter of owner Karen Boyd, is the fourth generation of the Boyd family to operate Bredenbeck's Bakery.

The historic building, a beautiful Victorian storefront, which houses Bredenbeck’s Bakery, has come long way from its original intentions of a laundromat and a sewing store in the mid-1800s. The store has met the challenges of the 21at century
with the additions of a fully functioning online catalog, private and corporate deliveries, and shipping to the entire continental United States.

Technological advancements have helped the Boyds to propel their business in the present and for the future, but these changes do not deter the Boyd’s ultimate goal of baking everything that they sell on the premises using all natural ingredients. This commitment to excellence has certainly been noticed by longtime residents of Chestnut Hill.

“What Bredenbecks means to me is a special destination, a very special place where I can go and bring my family for a treat, it is
wonderful,” Kate Beschem said.

Bredenbeck’s Bakery has become a staple in the Chestnut Hill
community. The bakery has drawn heavy media attention both locally on ABC and NBC, and also nationally when The Learning Channel showcased the store on its hit show Fabulous Cakes.

While national attention is always a welcomed attraction for the store its focus remains on the people of Chestnut Hill.

“Chestnut Hill is a very special place for me. I can remember playing in the alleyway next to the store as a child and growing up in our home above the store. I have wonderful memories of this place, it is where I grew up and I lived,” Boyd recalled.

  1. Such a nice article about Bredenbeck’s Bakery. Thanks so much for covering so much about the bakery’s history. One note: Karen’s daughter is named Lauren, not Laura.
