South Philadelphia: Annual Fundraiser Brings Puppies and Community Together

Megan West, founder of Save The Mums & Mutts, shared her experiences with organizing the annual fundraiser.

Puppies were the featured focus of the 3rd Annual Save The Mums & Mutts Fundraiser held at the Burke Playground, Second and Jackson streets, on the first Saturday in October that also included games, live music, food and raffles.

Megan West, the founder of Mums & Muts, began holding this fundraiser event three years ago after adopting a dog from a rescue program. West mixed in her lifelong ties to the Philadelphia Mummers.

“I thought I wanted to do something to help the rescue,” West said. “And I wanted to pair it with something that I was also passionate about which is the Mummers.”

Megan West, founder of Save The Mums & Mutts, shared her experiences with organizing the annual fundraiser.

The Mummers have a large presence in this particular area of South Philly known to locals and Mummers alike as ‘Two Street.”

“Two Street is where most of the Mummers clubs are,” West said. “You go up Second Street and you have the Mummers Museum, all of the string bands and every brigade. All of their club houses are on Two Street.”

West got her pup from Treetops Animal Rescue based out of Landenberg, Pa. This organization services the tri-state area and organizes foster parents for dogs they pull from shelters and helps them get vetted and and fixed.

West’s fundraiser is designed to raise money. Additionally, the event is devised to help people learn how to adopt a dog and get information about fostering or volunteering for TreeTops.

This event receives a wide base of support sporting sponsors like The Philly Pet Hotel, The Philadelphia Animal Hospital, Philadelphia City Councilman Mark Squilla, City Councilman Jim Kenney and countless local businesses.

“It’s one of the bigger events in our neighborhood,” West said,.”Our community is very tight knit and there are a ton of dog lovers. There’s no way anyone in our neighborhood doesn’t either love the mummers or the dogs. “
