When pharmacist Kris Hunsicker opened Fishtown Pharmacy on April 1, he was not only excited to have his own business but also to be welcomed by the local residents.
“I rehabbed the property myself, so I built our counters and our shelving,” Hunsicker said.
The process of opening the pharmacy involved more waiting than Hunsicker had anticipated. After searching for a year for the right property and rehabbing the building, he was stuck waiting six months for a state inspector to come inspect the building at 1802 Frankford Ave.
“Once the inspection was over I then waited another three months for my State Access ID. I could not accept any welfare insurance or state insurance until I got that number,” Hunsicker said.
Reactions from the community have only been positive for Hunsicker. He said he understands people expect a certain level of customer service, especially when they are not feeling their best, and has strived to go beyond what is expected. Hunsicker said he plans on doing this by offering services not offered by some bigger pharmacies.
“We have a full delivery service. We’ll deliver anywhere in the city,” Hunsicker said.
He said he hopes his business will continue to flourish and receive welcoming support from the local community. “It’s a cool opportunity to be in a neighborhood that seems like they’re seeking wellness as well as pharmaceuticals,” Hunsicker said.
Fishtown Pharmacy is open weekdays from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
