COVID-19: Florida Community Members Help Feed Families Amidst Pandemic

Our special reporting on COVID-19 may focus on communities outside Philadelphia, as many of our student journalists are now located outside of the city. Instead, our reporters will cover how the coronavirus is impacting their own communities from across the country and around the world. We will return to hyperlocal coverage of Philadelphia’s neighborhoods as soon as possible.

The city of Pompano Beach, Florida feeds 1,000 families in need every Thursday.

Local churches, clubs, and city officials come together to lift the burden of food disparity off of families’ shoulders.

“I’m always proud of my city,” Mayor Rex Hardin said.

Each family is given a 40 pound box of food to last a week.

Commissioner Tom McMahon said there will be a food drive every week until the pandemic ends.
