The Greater Philadelphia Asian Social Service Center recently devised a plan to help children who need optical care. After teaming up with La Salle University, both institutions constructed a program to provide uninsured children with eye exams and glasses.

GPASS is a non-profit organization that assists members of the community who need financial support and guidance. They are located on 4943 N. Fifth St. and have been an established association for 18 years. Although GPASS originally began its organization by helping Asian immigrants adjust to a new environment in the Philadelphia region, it has expanded the services by helping people of all ethnic backgrounds with financial support. GPASS also offers intensive outpatient programs for those who have fallen under the influence of drugs and alcohol.

Executive Director YoAn Kim said the newly adopted optical care program will only be temporary, but he and his staff are excited to help children who need glasses. “When La Salle chose us as a partner in this program, I was anxious to begin,” Kim said.

This temporary program offers a free eye exam and two free pairs of eyeglasses for children under the age of 18. Parents must prove they are uninsured and present financial evidence as well.
