Mayor Michael Nutter announced that Mt. Airy, USA, a community development corporation, will be receiving a $100,000 grant from the city’s Commerce Department to develop retail, parking and residential space within the Mt. Airy community.

The $100,000 is a part of a $1 million worth of city grants where the city’s Commerce Department is giving it away to nine different non-profit organizations.

The project is being called the Mt. Airy Transit Village. The grant will be going towards Mt. Airy’s development project along Washington Lane and Chew Avenue.

Local Mt. Airy resident Belinda Richardson, 50, said the community needed something like this to happen.

“This isn’t a bad neighborhood. There aren’t any restaurants down here. We need places like that. Also, this will create jobs. I might consider applying for a job if the project works out.”

Many cars pass through the intersection of Washington Lane and Chew Avenue during rush hour.

However, Richardson questioned if the project will take away from local businesses already established along Washington Lane and Chew Avenue.

On the other hand, Nutter says the nine different projects will create 368 permanent jobs.
