Tim Bennett has been in the green energy business for more than 13 years. He started Bennett Compost in 2009 to provide a solution for apartment-dwellers like him who wanted to compost.

Now the company picks up from 6,000 households and 100 businesses across Philadelphia. Last year, the company kept 3 million pounds of food waste out of landfills, Bennett said.

They have gained contracts with the city, working with recreation centers and prisons. Their ultimate goal is to service all 156 recreation centers and playgrounds in the city and to expand into the rest of Philadelphia’s 500,000 households.
