Germantown: A Philadelphia Favorite with a Hook

Muhammad’s Kitchen, located at the intersection of Germantown Avenue and Windrim Street, is serving up a Philadelphia classic with a different taste. The small restaurant owned by Abdul Muhammad specializes in fish hoagies. After being closed for a few years, Muhammad’s Kitchen is back with a brand new menu; however, the most popular item continues to be the fish hoagie. For $7, customers receive a fried whiting filet served on a hoagie roll with the customer’s choice of toppings including lettuce, tomatoes and onions. Donald Montrose says he enjoys getting the fish hoagie because the “fish is golden crisp, perfectly cooked and all the ingredients come together to make each bite taste like heaven.”

The business began after Mrs. Muhammad decided she wanted to open a business because of her love of cooking. The restaurant began as a bakery, and then added the fish hoagie, along with other items like fish fried rice and fish steaks, turning the bakery into a small restaurant. The restaurant serves mostly Halal meats, meat that is permissible by Islamic Law. Because of this, the restaurant attracts many Muslim customers who are in search of Halal meats. To help serve this audience, Muhammad’s Kitchen is open every day except Sundays. In the future, Muhammad says that he hopes to expand the restaurant to accomodate these customers further and allow them to dine in.
