Anthony Burgis of the Front Street Gym in Port Richmond will be moving on to the National Golden Gloves tournament for the third consecutive year, after stopping Rosilindo Morales in their 132 pound bout this past weekend at the Pennsylvania Eastern Regional Golden Gloves Championships.

Burgis moved into the 132 pound class this year after advancing to the national stage at lighter weight classes the prior two years. He is 33-6 overall in his career.

If Burgis emerges victorious in the National Golden Gloves tournament from April 25-30 in Indianapolis, he will have the opportunity to box for the United States Olympic team in the 2012 Olympics.

A spot on the U.S. Olympic Boxing team is at stake for Anthony Burgis.

“That’s always been my ultimate goal, to get to the Olympics. If I do that, I don’t have to worry about anything else,” Burgis said.

In his two other appearances in the National Golden Gloves tournament, Burgis fell short of his goal but has come closer to winning the event every time he participates. This year, he has his eyes set on taking home the top prize and the accolades that come with it.

Burgis has been hard at work at the Front Street Gym training with Orlando “Dallas” Perez. The two have been training together for six years.

After the boxing match, Burgis was not immediately available for comment.

  1. Awesome job Anthony, it is good to hear he is on the way to success in boxing. Be in the golden gloves is a good accomplishment and of course the Olympics are too. Just make sure you are enjoying the journey and not getting caught up in the future of being in the Olympics. It is good to have goals but have to enjoy the journey it takes to accomplish those goals.

  2. Nice read. I just passed this onto a friend who was doing some research on that. He just bought me lunch because I found it for him! Thus let me rephrase: Thanks for lunch!
