All communities have them – that market that’s been around forever or the construction company that has built half of the homes in the area. Family owned businesses make up a key part of a neighborhood’s dynamic, and bring both economic stability and consistency to the area.
The Bridesburg neighborhood is a community driven by family owned businesses. Here are five longstanding, family owned businesses in the area.
Slabinski Funeral Home
Establish in 1917 by Joseph F. Slabinski, the Slabinski Funeral Home on Orthodox Street is one of the oldest businesses in Bridesburg. Now in it’s third generation of ownership, the funeral home has been directed by Joseph F. Slabinski, III since 1976. In 2003 the Sucharski Funeral Home merged with the Slabinski Funeral Home, putting Joseph F. Slabinski, IV in charge of the second business. The family is active in the community, with Joseph F. Slabinski, III serving as the president of the Bridesburg Business Association.
Northeast Building Products
Northeast Building Products on Aramingo Avenue has been manufacturing energy-efficient windows and doors since 1975. The company was founded by Irv and Elaine Levin, and passed down to their son Alan Levin. The business provides services to more than 9,000 customers and produces more than 200,000 windows per year, according to the company’s website. As an environmentally conscious company, the Levin family’s business continues to make a positive impact on the community.
Rose Funeral Home
Obituaries, funeral services and funeral flowers are a few of the many things organized by those who work at Rose Funeral Home. The Rose Funeral Home is one of the oldest running funeral service providers to still exist Bridesburg today.
Bridesburg Roofing Company
For more than 60 years, owners Stanley Brach and his sons have been working to serve the Bridesburg community. The Bridesburg Roofing Company has been around for three generations. The Brach’s business provides roof repairs, coatings and cleaning services to those living in Bridesburg and the surrounding areas in the Northeast.
Lachowicz Quality Foods
Located on the corner of Almond and Orthodox streets is Lachowicz Quality Foods, a Polish deli known for more than 30 years to have the best kielbasa in the area. The deli is currently owned and operated by Robert Lachowicz. He is the third generation in the Lachowicz family to run the store.
Originally started as a candy counter, the business grew into a fresh food market serving 15-20 homemade foods every day.
