Election: Philadelphia Communist Speaks on Election as Party Grows

Dakota is a member of the Revolutionary Communists of America (RCA), notably the Philadelphia chapter. He is originally from the Pocono region, but currently resides in Brewerytown. He shared his and the party’s feelings on the 2024 presidential election, as well as the future of his party.

The RCA is a fairly new party, only existing since 1975. On social media and their official website, the party is extremely critical of both Vice President Kamala Harris and former President Donald Trump, the two main candidates for president in 2024. The website criticizes both candidates for having corporate interests in mind and for their stance on the war between Israel and Hamas.

Do you and members of the RCA plan to vote in this election?

No. We believe that neither candidate truly represents the needs of the working class. They both only serve the interests of corporations, which is what we oppose. Every four years, the capitalist media paints that year’s election as the most important of our lifetime, but nothing changes for working people. We can’t “vote for the lesser of two evils” because they’re both evil.

Is there anything either candidate could do to change your mind?

No. The ideological differences that we have with both parties are too extreme for us to support either one. Again, neither candidate represents the best interests of working-class citizens. Both candidates serve corporations and are complicit with what is occurring in Gaza currently. We’re more concerned with growing our own party.

Can you tell me a little bit about your party?

Sure. We are the Revolutionary Communists of America. We are currently trying to expand and even have our own newspaper. In America, we see the capitalist bosses stealing progress through profit and wage margins. The current political system keeps everyone’s attention away from this by keeping the public distracted with culture wars.

Are you running a candidate this year?

Currently, we aren’t big enough to realistically run candidates, but we are looking to grow. We are expanding through rallies, demonstrations, and newspaper sales. Our current goal is 10,000 members. Once we hit that, there’s no telling what we can’t do. We can begin running candidates and agitating unions.

Since it is one of the more talked-about issues, what is the RCA’s stance on the Israel-Hamas War?

We are vehemently anti-Zionist and oppose the creation of any state that encourages the violent oppression of any people. That is yet another reason why we will not be backing a candidate this year. Both Harris and Trump have been complicit in this.

What’s it like trying to get a communist party off the ground in a country that historically is not very fond of communism?

Obviously, America has a long tradition of being anti-communist, but we feel that the tide is turning in America. Capitalism is making more communists every day.
