North Philadelphia: Live Music and Vintage Clothes ‘On Girard’

Local Philadelphia rock band, The Sabriquets, performed in North Philadelphia on the 200 block of West Girard at an event called “On Girard,” a live music event that occurs the second Thursday of every month in front of a Vintage thrift store.

Lead singer of the band, James Hearne, said “We are a four piece we’re very much in the vain of Americana meets art rock and Wilco covering REM. Tasty and delicious.”

Hearne and lead guitarist, Dan Drago, have been playing together for 15 years and their influences mainly come from “rock music with a little bit of pop similar to the counting crows.”

“Most rock songs when you really get down to it are probably about a girl or a series of girls or the lack of a girl,” said Drago. The band played an hour set outside a vintage merchant shop called the Reverie, owned and operated by Brady Sanders.

“When your in the artistic field you tend to know a lot of people who have interesting jobs like working in thrift stores and they tend to have a real appreciation for that sort of thing so you get a lot more of those connection,” said Hearne.

Drago said their music is mainly influenced by Hearne’s ability or inability to hold on to relationships with the opposite sex and that most rock music is driven by musicians experience in relationships. Although Hearne leads in vocals, he said the band relies heavily on harmonies and back up vocals to complete the sound.

Hearne said the band plays in front of the thrift store every few months and it is fun for the band because Sanders provides beer and it gives them a chance to play for the community.

“Hopefully, it gives people the opportunity to be out and about. This part of town strikes me as one where you don’t have a whole lot of residential living. So second Thursday is a nice way for people to get out and meet their neighbors and see the different businesses that are around. For us it is a good way for us to play out of doors.”

The band is working toward a studio album but is trying to raise funds for the next album. The group plans on raising money by performing shows in the local and surrounding areas of Philadelphia. The Sobriquets can be reached on various social media outlets including Facebook.

  1. I love local bands. Local music actually inspired me to sponsor them with clothes. I’m going to look these guys up and give them a listen!
