For Alexis Hunter, becoming a business owner has been an idea that was a long time coming. Hunter, 25, and from Mt. Airy, had known she wanted to become a business owner, she just didn’t know which direction she wanted to go in. She decided to look at herself and her hobbies and open up a store, called Enhance Your Beauty, that catered not only to her interests but to what she believes are the interests of the community.
Enhance Your Beauty, located at 5036 Germantown Ave., is a beauty shop that specializes in makeup accessories. Hunter has been involved in fashion shows for years and has always had a love for fashion and makeup, so those were the foundations behind opening the store. “One of the other reasons I opened up this type of store was because I noticed that the market for beauty retail was mostly Korean, and I have not seen many African-American businesses like this around here,” Hunter said.
The grand opening of Enhance Your Beauty was held on April 15. A “Give Love Toiletries Drive” was held, encouraging members of the community to come out and donate assorted toiletries to Covenant House. Covenant House serves homeless, runaway and trafficked youth. For bringing in soap, shampoo, toothpaste or any other type of toiletry, customers were given a gift bag with an assortment of products sold at the store.
Hunter is very much involved in giving back to the community, and even wants to start a nonprofit organization in the future. “I will go around to local organizations that help those in need as a representative of Enhance Your Beauty to help in any way I can,” Hunter said.
Hunter has big hopes for the future of her store. The area around the store is slowly picking up with more businesses opening and more foot traffic in the area then in years past. “With my shop and the others opening up around here, I think it’s great for the community. It’s going to be a very exciting experience, ” Hunter said.
