Frankford Avenue is among one of Philadelphia’s largest streets, spanning many miles across the city. One of the neighborhoods that Frankford Avenue passes through is East Kensington, where a variety of different businesses are located. From community organizations, to a 35-year-old fire protection company, East Kensington’s stretch of the avenue has a number of places that you might not have heard of.
1. New Kensington Community Development Corporation (pictured above)
The New Kensington Community Development Corporation (NKCDC) is an organization that strives to revitalize the Kensington community. Through initiatives that promote economic and real estate development, vacant land management, community engagement and neighborhood planning, the NKCDC has played a large role in the neighborhood’s development since starting 28 years ago.
2. Walking Fish Theater
The home of B. Someday Productions, Walking Fish Theater is an alternative theater, specializing in live performances that span across a wide spectrum. From comedies and dramas, to burlesque and small music shows, the theater offers something for just about anyone. The theater also offers both youth and adult classes, teaching students about theater and engaging the community in the arts.
3. Schweizer Fire Protection Company
Schweizer Fire Protection Company is a family-owned business that has enjoyed a 35-year run, and is still going strong. The company specializes in recharging fire extinguishers, but they also do inspections on automatic fire systems and sprinkler systems. While servicing commercial businesses throughout Philadelphia, the company also works in areas of New Jersey and Delaware.
4. Four Son’s Pizzeria and Cafe
Throughout Philadelphia, there are many places one could go to to buy a slice of pizza, but few have enjoyed the success that Four Son’s Pizzeria and Cafe has. For over 45 years, Four Son’s has been serving the neighborhood’s locals, offering a diverse menu of food options, while maintaining a neighborhood pizza place feel.
5. Atlantis: The Lost Bar
One wouldn’t have to travel far to enjoy Philadelphia Brewing Company’s line of beer, as Atlantis: The Lost Bar is directly across the street from the East Kensington brewery. The bar offers a wide array of local craft beers, as well as specialty drinks, such as their popular Bloody Mary. The bar is also one of the sites for the Frankford Avenue Arts monthly event, “First Friday.”
