The Manayunk Roxborough Art Center hosted an opening reception this weekend to kick off its annual member show.

The opening reception for the Annual Members Show at the Manayunk Roxborough Art Center took place this weekend.

The Manayunk Roxborough Art Center, located at 419 Green Lane, has been promoting art in the community for almost 60 years. Tanya Bhagwat said the annual members show gives the members of the Manayunk Roxborough Art Center a chance to exhibit their work in a representation of the center.

Members of the center aren’t just from the neighborhood. There are members from as far away as Montgomery County and Delaware who exhibit at the center.

Ron Howard, vice president of human resources, said the membership keeps increasing. “We are constantly growing. We are probably at about almost 70 members all together,” Howard said. “We have had a big boost in our membership.”

Having a community of artists is something that member Francesco Sessa said he enjoys. “Maybe the best part is you get to talk with other artists, meet new people [and] people ask about your work,” Sessa said. “There’s a positive energy.”

Susan Dews and granddaughter Emily Burke, who displayed artwork at the center, attended the annual member show opening reception this weekend.

Local artist and center member Nicholas Longenecker said the center provides a welcome place for artists in transition. “There’s a variety of artists and that’s what’s interesting. There’s so many different people doing art at different stages,” Longenecker said. “It’s very comfortable to be in.”

Howard said the Manayunk Roxborough Art Center launched a variety of classes ranging from after-school art, poetry workshops and theater classes. These classes are designed to draw more people in from the community. “We are really working hard this year to expand the range of classes that we can offer to the community from young tots way up to adults,” Howard said.

The Annual Members exhibit will be on display Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. until the end of October.
