The Trans Art Market was held on April 2 in the parking lot outside Love City Brewing at 1023 Hamilton St. Proceeds from the market raised $4,000 for Housing Reparations Philadelphia and Cars For Philly, two social justice organizations focused on economic justice for black and brown communities.
“We focus on helping people with car payments, down payments, monthly payments, car insurance,” Jay Gonzales, an organizer with Cars For Philly, said.
Much of the art for sale was produced by LGBTQ+ artists and focused on themes of trans representation. Many attendees saw the market as an opportunity to support the organizations, the artists, and Philadelphia’s trans community.
“I really want to connect with other people who are queer and trans and Jewish,” Dabey Levson, an artist at the event, said. “And to just find community through art.”
As attendees milled about the market, many greeted each other as friends and thanked one another for their support.
“I am an artists myself and want to come out in support of all the Philly artists,” Emalee Douglas, an attendee at the event said.
