For nearly the past decade, local Fairhill resident Michael Payne has been distributing donated toys and supplies to neighborhood children whose families are not able to afford such gifts.
His group, known as “Marshall & York,” after the street corner where he has lived for years, has traveled to area toy stores to ask for donations to his cause. “Three years ago, we were able to hand out $3,000 in toys,” he said, citing one of his best turnouts. “Any kids I can help, I will. Kids are kids.” he added.
Payne also said he has used the donations he receives to help feed the homeless in the area when he can. He noted that growing up in the neighborhood made him realize how much of a difference a little charity can make in the lives of those who have been struggling. “Some toy stores will give. Some won’t,” he said, “but we’ll just keep trying.”
