Striking union workers held a protest this week in Johannesburg City Center. Members from seven unions, including Chemical Energy, Paper, Printing, Wood and Allied Worker’s Union, the General Industries Worker’s Union of South Africa and the South African Chemical Worker’s Union, presented a list of demands to a representative for the companies they work for. The demands include a 13 percent pay increase, a ban on labor brokers and a 40-hour work week. Reporters from Philadelphia Neighborhoods attended the demonstration and spoke to union members, a company representative and residents of Johannesburg.
