On morning Ms. Karen Sisco woke up ready to fulfill a lifelong childhood dream. That dream was to open a pet supply shop.
“That morning the Lord laid on my heart to start my own business and to name it Picky Pet Supply Store,” explained Sisco.
Sisco knew there was a great need for a business of this kind in the North Philadelphia area. Picky Pet Supply Store, located at 2028 N. 17th St., offers pet supplies generally for dogs but does carry some supplies for other pets including birds, rabbits and gerbils. Sisco says if she receives a request for a certain product she will do her best to honor that request. Picky Pet Supply Store does not just sell goods needed to support your pet but offers an array of pet services. Sisco offers basic dog training along with dog grooming. She enjoys teaching others about pet grooming because that very act helps the pet live a longer, healthier life.
“I love educating people about the importance of grooming,” explained Sisco. “That means way more to me than the money.”
Before Sisco opened her own business, she worked as an animal technician at an animal shelter. Through that work experience, she saw the consequences of pet overpopulation.
According to the Humane Society of the United States, “There are an estimated 6-8 million homeless animals entering shelters every year.”
Even though half of those dogs find happy homes, half are euthanized. Because of this, Sisco stressed the importance of spaying and neutering your pet. Sisco’s primary mission is to educate people on proper pet maintenance so the pet can live the most satisfying life possible.
Sisco said, “You should care for your dog the way you would want to be cared for.”
On occasion, the store does sell puppies and kittens when Sisco is able to obtain them. Currently, Sisco has a 3-year-old female turtle for sale named Bloop along with a few baby turtles all searching for loving owners. Picky Pet Supply Store is open Monday to Thursday from 3 p.m. to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
The store slogan says it best, “People in the know go where the picky pets go.”
