For the fourth year in a row the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby this past weekend featured art, rock music and really weird vehicles.
Each year since 2007, contestants come together to show off their innovative human-powered vehicles. These kinetic sculptures also have artistic themes, allowing contestants to show their personality through art and ingenuity. Moreover, the goal of the competition is to create the most interesting and odd sculpture that champions human powered transit. Each sculpture is unique in design, yet winners are given awards in categories such as best art, best costume and best engineering.
“This festival– which is the most unique fest in the city– is one big event to showcase our hood and raise money,” said Krista Peel, a co-organizer of the festival this year.
“The Trenton Avenue Arts Festival is the fundraiser for the East Kensington Neighbors Association whose main goal is to promote and express the splendor of this area. This fundraiser for EKNA is the main supply of funds for our association– whose members are 19,125 neighbors– to plan street cleanup projects, tree plantings and building green spaces in our area, which we desperately need and do not officially have.”
The area has developed and seems amazing, especially when events such as the derby are successful. This year, Peel estimated that there was a turnout of approximately 10,000 people.“Not only is this festival a fun event, but the Kensington Kinetic Sculpture Derby is also one of the most incredible events that happens in our city. Truly, the Trenton Avenue Arts Festival is the front row to watch this fun, and the best artisans, organizations and food vendors in the city come out to make it a full and fabulous time,” she said.
