What could be better than a day in the park by the waterfront?
Some might say a day in the park by the waterfront with a beautiful background including the Ben Franklin Bridge and sail boats gliding along in the water.
Oh, and do not forget about the free concert to go with that every Wednesday. This is Waterfront Wednesdays at Penn Treaty Park. This is all a part of the New Kensington Development Corp.’s plans to beautify not only the park, but the waterfront too.
The waterfront in Philadelphia has been the subject of many plans over recent years, however only a select few have come to fruition. The most notable of these plans has been the SugarHouse Casino on Delaware Avenue. As controversial as it was for the neighborhood, it is still standing tall. Many other plans have either fallen through or have not made it to the final stages of completion. The waterfront and residents do not need businesses and buildings along the waterfront however, they simply need activities and events to bring them together to this scenic venue.
The NKCDC has teamed up with the Friends of Penn Treaty Park, the Pennsylvania Horticultural Society and the Delaware River Waterfront Corporation among others to help bring back the old and create new beauty in the park and along the waterfront. Waterfront Wednesdays was created to bring about more reasons for residents to come out to the park and enjoy the weather. In addition, residents can help with future development plans by seeing the park for themselves and voicing their thoughts on how the park and waterfront could be beautified. Clint Jones, who often visits the park with his dog said, “I think the open field in the park could use more nature, or maybe some sort of recreational activity for the kids in addition to the playground in the shade.”
Waterfront Wednesdays runs several weeks throughout the summer with numerous performers. The best part is a lot of the performers are homegrown from the Philadelphia region. Some of these bands have career aspirations, while for others it is simply a fun hobby.
The first concert this year was on June 8, featuring Yellow Humphrey and Juston Stens and The Get Real Gang.
