Hunting Park: Volunteers Help Local Business Prosper

In times of economic hardship, volunteers have become an increasing necessity to keep many businesses running. In particular, community programs are especially in need of volunteers when funding is so hard to get.

A child involved with Blessings Inc. patiently waited for Haywood at the recreation center.

Blessings Inc. is a Christian nonprofit organization committed to improving the well being of today’s youth. The organization runs out of the Recreation Center in Hunting Park, which is located at 900 W. Hunting Park Ave. Heather Haywood, director and founder of Blessings Inc., said that she currently runs the business with three volunteers.

“We are a small organization, so volunteers are key,” Haywood said.

The organization also applies for grant money for funding, but until the company is able to obtain the grant money and grow, volunteers are vital for success. One of the largest ways they advertise their volunteer opportunities is through various websites. The company is on social media sites such as Facebook, as well as keeping a presence on websites dedicated to volunteering.

Joan Lloyd-Lendell, one of the organization’s volunteers, has been with the program for the past two years.

“I pick up a bunch of the kids in the community on my way to the program,” Lloyd-Lendell said. “These kids might not be able to get here otherwise.”
