The Philadelphia International House was home to a wash of brightly colored acrylic paint this weekend as local artists worked on an in-house abstract mural.
Philadelphia-based artists Paul Santoleri and Mauro Zamora painted for six straight hours on a mural currently hanging in the building’s first floor. The duo was part of the Murals Set in Motion exhibit, which also featured videos of other artists painting murals around the world.
The painters attracted admiration from passersby and international students heading to and from their dorm rooms in the building. Onlookers took pictures of the mural in progress with their mobile phones and peppered the artists with questions about the design ideas being used.
Guest curator Sean Stoops organized the event. He has previously curated 10 shows for InLiquid, the artist group that manages the programming space in that room of the International House.
“I wanted to create a setting where different artists could collaborate their individual ideas into one mural,” Stoops said. “The goal is to have this creative space where artists can work together on a piece and just see where it goes and be as open and experimental as they can.”
Stoops periodically took pictures of the artists’ progress. He plans on turning those images into a time lapse film of the artists’ work, which will be featured on InLiquid’s website.
The International House plans to place the completed mural in its theater.
The Murals Set in Motion exhibit will be featured at the Philadelphia International House until March 2. Admission is free.
